Where the Ritual Began
Long before tea ceremonies became synonymous with Japan, powdered tea was prepared and whisked in China during the Song Dynasty (960–1279).
Scholars, monks, and artists gathered around bowls of finely milled green tea, appreciating not only its taste, but the care and attention required to prepare it.
This method of whisking powdered tea later traveled to Japan with Zen Buddhist monks, where it was preserved, refined, and gradually evolved into chanoyu, the tea ceremony known today.
At Bankai Essence, we honor both chapters of this story.
Our ceremonial matcha is grown in the West Lake region of Hangzhou, where Song dynasty tea culture flourished, and processed using the traditional Japanese Uji method that defines modern ceremonial matcha.
Every bowl is a reminder that traditions do not appear fully formed. They are carried, refined, and passed on with care.
